Kharkiv National Medical University

Founded in 1805, Kharkiv National Medical University has passed a glorious way from the Faculty of Medicine of Kharkiv Imperial University to a higher medical education institution, which trains not only highly-skilled doctors but also academic and research personnel for medicine.
The University has 70 departments. The Departments, which provide training for the 1st –3rd year students, are located in the University campus. The Departments, which provide clinical training, are located at the Training and Research Medical Complex “The University Clinic” of KhNMU, the Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, the University Dental Centre, 9 regional and 10 city hospitals. The University also comprises the Education and Research Institute for Postgraduate Training, providing continuous qualifying physician education throughout their careers; the College of Medicine; the Education and Research Centre, the Centre for Preclinical and Clinical Research; the Centre for Medical Regional Study; the Centre for Gender Education.
Kharkiv National Medical University has gained a national and international reputation as a progressive provider of high-quality higher medical education, attracting students from all over the world.
The University was repeatedly marked at International Exhibitions, received honorary titles and gold medals in different categories.
The University has a powerful research basis. Researches are conducted in the Central Research Laboratory, 4 fundamental research laboratories and at departments, as well as on the basis of 2 scientific institutes and 6 education-research-production units (“Therapy” – Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 and the National Institute of Therapy named after L.T. Malaya of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine; “Surgery” – Department of Surgery No. 1 and the Institute of General and Urgent Surgery of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine; “Obstetrics and Gynaecology” – Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 1 and the Institute of Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; “Medical Radiology” – Department of Radiology and Radiation Medicine and the Institute of Medical Radiology named after S.P. Grigoriev of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine; “Urology” – Department of Urology, Nephrology and Andrology and Shapoval Regional Clinical Centre for Urology and Nephrology; “Medical Genetics” – Department of Medical Genetics and the Ukrainian Institute of Medical Genetics).
The general management of KhNMU is in hands of the Rector, first vice-rector for research and education, vice-rectors for research and education, vice-rector for research, vice-rector for estates and facilities and economic affairs. The administrators are responsible for the day-to-day management of the administrative and logistical services.
The University comprises mainly 7 faculties.
1st and 2nd Faculties of Medicine
Future doctors who decided to master specialty “General Medicine” study at two faculties, namely the first and the second faculties of medicine. More than two thousand students’ study at these faculties.
The course of studies lasts for 6 years. Then students undergo internship training in major field of study.
Primary specialization covers about 30 basic specialties, therapeutic ones include “Internal Medicine”, “Infectious Diseases” and “General Practice (Family Medicine)”; surgical specialties include “Surgery”, “Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation”, “Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology”, “Urology”; obstetrical gynaecological specialties include “Obstetrics and Gynaecology”. Secondary specialization is subdivided into more than 40 basic specialties.
3rd Faculty of Medicine
This faculty trains students in two specialties: “Paediatrics” and “Nursing” (duration of studies is 6 and 1 to 3 years respectively).
Clinical departments of the faculty are located at main Kharkiv hospitals, such as Regional Clinical Hospital, Regional Children Clinical Hospital, Regional Children Infectious Hospital, S.P. Grigoriev’s Institute for Medical Radiology, City Clinical (multi-field) Hospital No. 17.
All the graduates of the faculty become employed in their field of medicine which gives the evidence of not only high ranking of KhNMU but also of great experience of academic staff of the faculty and serious devoted work of students.
Primary specialization is carried out in such specialties as “Paediatrics”, “Paediatric Surgery”, “Neonatology”, “Paediatric Anaesthesiology”, “General Practice (Family Medicine)”, and “Nursing”.
4th Faculty of Medicine
This faculty trains students in the following specialties: “Preventive Medicine” (education-qualification level “Specialist”, duration of studies – 6 years) and “Laboratory Diagnosis” (education-qualification level “Bachelor”, duration of studies – 4 years).
The graduates of the “Preventive Medicine” programme work in institutions of Sanitation and Epidemiology Service of Ukraine in positions of sanitary doctors, epidemiologists or microbiologists. Bachelors work at different laboratories: clinical (hospitals, outpatient clinics), microbiological (Sanitation and Epidemiology Service, hospitals, outpatient clinics), sanitary-chemical (Sanitation and Epidemiology Service), toxicological (Sanitation and Epidemiology Service of Armed Forces, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine, Forensic Medicine), immunological (hospitals, outpatient clinics), pathomorphological (hospitals, outpatient clinics), forensic (bureau of forensic medical examination).
5th and 6th Faculties for Training of International Students
Since 1951, the University has been training foreign students. Since then, the University has trained 5,000 doctors from more than 100 countries.
The University is currently training about 7,000 students; among them, more than 3,000 are representatives of 82 nations of the world.
The faculties train foreign citizens in the fields of “General Medicine” and “Dentistry” (qualification level “Specialist”) in the Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. The duration of studies is 6 and 5 years respectively.
KhNMU also carries out pre-university training of foreigners at its Preparatory Department. Postgraduate education is provided by postgraduate courses in 35 specialties and by residency in 25 specialties.
7th Faculty of Dentistry
Clinical training of dentists is provided in the University Dental Centre, where all the departments of all dentistry specialties and the department of postgraduate dental training are found.
The skilful research and academic staff of specialized departments of the Faculty of Dentistry trains efficient specialists. During their studies, students master the most progressive methods of treatment of dental patients, such as dental restoration, modern methods of prosthodontics and implantation, modern methods of hygiene and prevention of dental diseases, modern methods of orthodontic treatment, etc.
The course duration is 5 years.
Postgraduate studies: internship training in General Dentistry (2 years), clinical residency (2 years), PhD course (3 to 4 years).
DEGREE PROGRAMS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS
Foreign nationals’ study at:
– the Preparatory Department (Pre-university training, foundation studies);
– 2 faculties for foreign students (undergraduate courses);
undergo postgraduate courses.
Each academic year at Kharkiv National Medical University is divided into two semesters.
An academic year begins:
– for undergraduate students on September, 1;
– for students of the Preparatory Department from September, 1 to October, 1 (depending upon academic groups formation);
– for clinical postgraduates from September, 1 to November, 1.
Students have their vacations in winter and in summer.
General Medicine, 6 years
Dentistry, 5 years
The graduates are awarded with the degree of specialist in General Medicine or Dentistry and are qualified as Physicians or Dentists with the title of “Doctor of Medicine”. The Diploma is internationally recognized.
Languages of instruction: Ukrainian, English and Russian.
Course Structure and Curriculum
The training is provided in compliance with the General State Syllabuses and Curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The curriculum provides two stages of the undergraduate training of a doctor: preclinical and clinical. The structure of the curriculum is aimed at the observation of logic sequence of subjects taught, which are organized as follows: humanities and socioeconomic sciences; natural sciences; professional courses.
The main provisions of the curriculum, concerning the duration and scopes of the academic load, include:
– the duration of training is 6 years, or 360 ECTS credits (in General Medicine), and 5 years or 300 ECTS credits (in Dentistry);
– one academic year lasts 40 weeks and represents 60 ECTS credits at an average;
– one ECTS credit consists of 30 academic hours.
Assessment/ Examination System
In the process of training a constant control of students’ progress is conducted. At the end of each semester the final control is provided by means of tests and examinations in subjects studied during the semester.
Students’ progress in each subject is assessed according to the 4-point local and ECTS grading scales.
At the University, a necessary infrastructure has been introduced for organization and medical provision of standardized control of knowledge in subjects of the general scientific cycle based on the requirements regarding the professional competence of the specialist in accordance with the state standards of education of Ukraine /fundamental sciences/ – Licensed integrated examination STEP 1 (after the 3-rd year) and the cycle of the professional and practical training subjects (at the 6-th year in General Medicine and at the 5-th year in Dentistry) – Licensed integrated examination STEP 2. It envisages a wide use of the test control over the current and final levels, as well as a selected test.
On completion of the training, practice-focused state examinations are passed in main subjects.
– Specialty “General Medicine”: Internal Medicine, Occupational and Infectious Diseases; Surgical Diseases with Paediatric Surgery; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Childhood Diseases with Childhood Infectious Diseases; Hygiene, Social Medicine, Organization and Economics of Public Health;
– Specialty “Dentistry”: Therapeutic Dentistry; Oral Surgery; Prosthetic Dentistry; Paediatric Dentistry.
Graduates of higher medical education institutions who wish to continue their training are offered to undergo a postgraduate course:
– a probation during 1 to 2 years;
– a clinical postgraduate course (clinical residency) lasting for 2 – 4 years;
– a PhD course with an opportunity to defend a thesis competing for a scientific degree (the course duration is 3 years).
A person, who has completed his /her clinical postgraduate training in the chosen specialty, is awarded with a Certificate of Specialized Training in Medicine / Dentistry (Clinical Residency). The Certificate confers the right to work as a medical / dental practitioner.
Our university today

has 8 Faculties: 1st – Medical, 2nd – Medical, 3rd – Medical, 4th – Medical, Stomatological, 5th and 6th – Medical Faculties for Training Foreign Students; these Faculties graduate doctors with the education-qualification level of a Specialist in such specialities as General Medicine, Paediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Stomatology; the Faculty of Postgraduate Training provides continuous development of doctors’ skills during all their professional activity;

is a modern multi-type educational establishment with its powerful scientific, material and technical basis, which includes: 6 education-research-production units; 2 research institutes, such as the Research Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Diseases of KhNMU and the Ukrainian Institute of Clinical Genetics of KhNMU; the University Stomatological Centre as the medical-educational-scientific unit of KhNMU; the Scientific-Practical Medical Centre of KhNMU; the Ukrainian Scientific-Practical Medical Centre of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductology; the Medical College of KhNMU;
has 44 clinical Departments, where medical work is done by 497 workers of the University (these consist of 96 Professors, 191 Associate Professors and 210 assistants) and 128 doctors of the University clinics, 73 postgraduates, 48 clinical postgraduates and 32 masters; of them, there are 331 medical workers with the highest category, 68 with the first, and 59 with the second;
has 5 specialized academic councils for defending Doctor’s and Candidate’s theses; carries out training of doctors and scientists at such stages as interns, masters, clinical postgraduates, postgraduates and doctoral candidates;
took part in 126 international scientific forums and 340 Ukrainian scientific forums;
cooperates with 18 foreign institutions;

has the Central Research Laboratory, 4 problem laboratories, the Educational-Scientific Centre based on classrooms for phantom techniques of education and computerized classrooms, and the Computer Centre;
has the Scientific Library, whose fund comprises over 1 million copies, and 16 computerized classrooms; more than 550 modern computers, video and audio aids are used in the process of training;
is the place for active functioning of 18 scientific-pedagogical schools;
has its students’ self-government, six hostels, with the successful work of the Youth Centre, the complex for physical education and health improvement, and “Medic” sports-health camp;
was a recipient of the Gold Medal of the International Exhibition “Education and Career – 2010” in the nomination “Development of Students’ Research”.
Educational services for foreign citizens
Foreign students of Kharkiv National Medical University study at the 5th Faculty for Training Foreign Students (Russian medium) and at the 6th Faculty for Training Foreign Students (English medium), as well at the Preparatory Department, or undergo postgraduate and clinical postgraduate (residency) courses (Licence of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine AB No. 552643).
The training lasts 1 year.
The Preparatory Department of KhNMU is one of the best in Kharkiv. The training is performed on the basis of the University departments and at its laboratories. This training is given in the Russian language and general subjects, including physics, chemistry and biology, with the purpose of the subsequent study of these students at higher educational establishments of the medical-biological type. During their training at the Preparatory Department of KhNMU its students make the acquaintance of professors and teachers of the University. On finishing the Preparatory Department its students are issued Certificates approved by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science.
Undergraduate medical education
Foreign students are trained in the following specialties’:
- “General Medicine”, the period of study is 6 years.
- “Stomatology”, the period of study is 5 years.
Languages of instruction: Russian, Ukrainian, English. Since 1996 the University has been training students in the English medium in General Medicine, and since 2008 in Stomatology. The acade¬mic groups consist of 8-10 persons.
Within the period of studies, the students undergo academic training in main medical and dental specialities. They take part in examinations of patients, giving urgent aid, work at X-ray rooms, clinical and biochemical laboratories. Particular attention is paid to clinical rounds of patients, their management, filling in and arrangement of medical reports with their subsequent analysis.
The graduates are awarded a Diploma of Specialist and qualified as Physicians with the title of “Doctor of Medicine” in General Medicine or Stomatologists with the title of “Doctor of Medicine” in Stomatology.
Qualified graduates of higher medical educational insti¬tutions who wish to continue their postgraduate training (in the Russian language) are given the right to undergo:
- a clinical postgraduate course (residency) lasting 2-4 years;
- a postgraduate course with an opportunity to defend a thesis competing for a scientific degree, the term of training is 3 years.
KhNMU has created all conditions for improving the professional level in the specialities acquired. The University departments have modern diagnostic and medical equipment and laboratories for researches. The most popular specialities include Surgery, Ophthalmology, Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, etc.
The work of a clinical postgraduate (resident) is carried on in compliance with the individual plan, which is devised and approved under the guidance of the head of a department or its professor, who is responsible for training of this resident, not later than one month after his/her enrolment. The plan envisages study of the basic speciality, a number of related clinical subjects, medical statistics, clinical biochemistry and pharmacology, medical genetics, etc.
Each specialist, who has finished his/her clinical postgraduate course, is awarded a Certificate of Specialized Training in Medicine (Residency) according to international standards and a Transcript to the above Certificate with indication of the numbers of hours in the studied subjects and grades for them. This Certificate gives the right to carry out all works, which are related to the speciality acquired
General Information for Students
Accommodation is provided by student hostels. Ukrainian and international students stay in student hostels in rooms for 2-3 people that meet the sanitary requirements and norms of Ukraine. This accommodation is available all the year round and for the whole period of training. Rooms are provided with the necessary furniture and bedding. There are toilets and showers with hot and cold water supply system, as well as a kitchen on every floor of the hostel. Every student hostel has a cafe, a gym, and classrooms for studying, laundries, medical posts, and Internet centres.
The hostel fees depend upon the size and comfort of the dwelling space.
Students can rent apartments as well.
A broad variety of food products from all over the world can be found in food stores and supermarkets and gives foreign citizens an excellent opportunity to stick to the same foods they were accustomed to at home. It is a good idea for a student to learn how to cook. Students may go to cheap student cafes, or prepare their own meals in a hostel kitchen. At the University, students have meals at canteens and refreshment bars.
The University Scientific-Practical Medical Centre provides medical care of students. Students regularly undergo prophylactic medical and fluorography examinations.
Students are able to use the enormous resources of the University. They have free access to the library, as well as full use of all the facilities provided by the University.
The University departments have modern classrooms and laboratories and have all the opportunities for training of students. The Education and Research Centre of the University is equipped with phantom models used for training purposes.
The Scientific library plays an important role in academic activities and students training, it takes an integral place in information support system of educational and academic work carried out in the University. The library fund comprises more than 1 million items. The library services are computer-based. Electronic site of the library provides access to an electronic catalogue and other services. Repository, which is a part of a general electronic collection of the library, became an important step towards the system of information exchange with the world scientific community.
The University has access to Internet. The network enables the University students and staff to intensively use database online for their studies and research.
At the University, several museums function: the Museum of the History of the University, the Museum of Human Anatomy, and the Morphological Museum. The museums comprise valuable collections, many of which are as old as two hundred years, and contribute to students’ getting profound knowledge.
“Good health is the greatest asset” – is the motto on the emblem of Kharkiv National Medical University. To save this assert one must live a healthy lifestyle, a key element of which is physical training.
The students are provided with all conditions necessary for going in for sports. There are 3 gymnasia (for games, gymnastics and heavy athletics) at the University.
The University’s Department of Physical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine with a Course of Physical Education and Health meets the tasks of students’ health promotion, their all-round physique, motivates students to systematically practise physical exercises.
Thanks to sportsmen’s hard work and coaches’ professional approach to trainings, students of the University take top places at regional, Ukrainian and European championships and bring to their alma-mater cups and medals.
There are 25 sports units for alternative types of physical and therapeutic-physical training development in the University:
– arm-wrestling (men), arm-wrestling (women), athletic tourism, badminton, basketball, checks, chess, cross-country skiing, fencing, fitness, football, handball (men), handball (women), heavy athletics, kettlebell lifting (men), kettlebell lifting (women), orienteering, powerlifting, recreative gymnastics, rhythmic-sportive gymnastics, table tennis, tennis, track and field athletics, volley-ball (men), volley-ball (women).
There is also a health and fitness centre, sports complex and sports and recreation camp “Medik”.
