Medical education in the Crimea has a long-standing history. As early as 1794 the empress Catherine the Great decided to open Medico-Surgery Academy. But this project was unsuccessful.
However progressive people of Russia didn’t stop thinking of a higher educational institution to be founded in the Crimea. And since the end of the XIX century a number of scientific and medical institutions appeared in the Crimea due to private donations. By that time the Crimea has already become all-Russian resort.
After a long break, in 1916 Tavrichesky local autonomous bodies started the Tavrichesky University and a medical faculty was supposed to be a part of it. The history of Tavrichesky University begins just with the medical faculty on the 10th of April 1918. At first it was a branch of Kiev University of St. Vladimir and since April 14, 1918 it has become an independent higher education institution.
The first rector of the medical faculty and the dean at the same time was R. I. Helvikh, Professor of Medicine, anatomist by profession. 109 students were admitted to study at the medical faculty, being the most popular one. There were 15 clinical departments at the medical faculty.
The first graduates of the medical faculty got their diplomas in 1922. A total number of graduates was 523 doctors for the time of the faculty existence. After the university was reorganized into the pedagogical institute in 1925, the medical faculty was liquidated. Thus higher medical education existed for 7 years in the Crimea

The First Medical Faculty
The history of the First medical faculty is inseparably connected with the foundation of Crimea State medical university named after S. I. Georgievsky. The first enrolment of students to the faculty was made in 1931, and in 1936 first doctors graduated from the University.
At different time the faculty was headed by prominent scientists and organizers, each of them made his contribution into the development of the University. The first dean of the faculty was Professor V. M. Totsky. He held office for 24 years. Then the faculty was directed by Professors V. I. Tomilov, N. S. Kuznetsov, S. N. Krutikov, assistant Professor V. P. Shurygin. During the last 24 years the dean of the faculty has been Honoured Worker of Higher School of Ukraine, Professor A. I. Kradinov.
The faculty is famous for its traditions. At different years outstanding scientists studied and worked here: Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Director-General of Kurgan reconstructive traumatology and orthopedy research center G. A. Ilizarov; Corresponding member of Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR M. M. Samsonov; Academician of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, director of Nutrition research institute of Ukraine V. G. Perederiy. The faculty departments were headed by Corresponding Member of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine G. V. Troitsky, the founder of plastic operations on the stomach Professor Ye.I. Zakharov, Professors A. I. Bliskunov, E. M. Shimkus, P. A. Tepper, V. I. Zyablov, A. G. Glaurov. All of them founded scientific schools.
At present 20 Professors – doctors of medical sciences, 35 assistant Professors, 50 assistants – candidates of medical sciences are working at the 15 departments of the first medical faculty. 80% of the lecturers have a doctoral or a Candidate. academic degree. The departments are headed by the famous scientists, Professors V. F. Kubyshkin, V. M. Efetov, L. V. Dudar, N. N. Volobuyev, A. I. Kradinov, K. A. Efetov, V. V. Mogila, G. M. Kushnir, A. N. Rybalka, Ye. S. Korolenko and others. Professors and teachers of the faculty have the top attestation medical category in their specialties. 15 postgraduates and 16 clinical ordinators study at the clinical departments.
Students are taught according to the curriculum and programs by Ministry of Health of Ukraine. In the first and second years students study humanitarian and fundamental subjects, which are the basis for medical knowledge acquired during the following years.
Students’ clinical knowledge – diagnostics and treatment of patients, practical skills – is of particular significance. Beginning from the third year and till graduation from the University at practical classes and during summer practical training, students work with patients, master and use modern methods of diagnostics and treatment. An important form of check up of students’ knowledge is a testing frame, elaborated and introduced at the University, with a set of tests to meet the requirements of licensing examinations KROK-1 and KROK-2 in medicine. The indices of the academic progress of the faculty graduates have averaged 70% during the last years.
The dean’s office maintains close contact with graduates, most of them raise theirs skills at the University faculty of post-diploma education. Doctors – graduates of the faculty have a high rating among the specialists graduated from other higher schools. They satisfy the requirements of our region in appropriate specialists completely and hold offices according to their qualification.
At the faculty where about 700 students are taught there are all the necessary conditions for successful training and researches. Clinical departments of the faculty are situated on base of large medical institutions of Simferopol, equipped with modern diagnostic facilities. Every department of the faculty is a scientific collective, which gets the most talented students, members of students’ scientific societies to take part in scientific investigations. That is why future research workers master special skills already when students, and annual students’ scientific conferences take place in overcrowded lecture halls.
Modern computer technologies are widely used in instruction, students having the possibility to examine patients in computer x-ray rooms, to study functional and anatomical changes of different organs in different diseases with help of ?-cameras under the guidance of teachers. Students may use ultrasonographs, powerful sources of radiation for radiotherapy of malignant tumors, endoscopic and endosurgical equipment, etc.
Heads of clinical departments, Professors V. M. Efetov, L. V. Dudar, V. F. Kubyshkin, A. I. Kradinov, V. V. Mogila, N. N. Volobuyev, A. N. Rybalka, G. M. Kushnir and others keep and enhance great traditions of Russian and Ukrainian clinical medicine, embracing sympathy with a suffering person, the attitude, which can be expressed by the word «charity». This word was often repeated in lectures and speeches of N. І. Pirogov and other prominent doctors of the past and takes on particular significance today.
The Second Medical Faculty
The history of the Second medical faculty dates back to 1939 when the pediatric faculty was established, later on reorganized into the second medical one. At the faculty there are 28 doctors of medical sciences, 76 candidates of medical sciences, including 34 assistant Professors.
From 1997 to 2001 at the faculty 4 doctoral theses, including one in the specialty «Pediatrics», and 27 candidate theses, 9 of them in the specialty «Pediatrics» were defended. During the last five years 11 monographs, 26 textbooks and manuals, 460 scientific articles and 40 methodical recommendations have been published at the faculty.
The members of the departments successfully solve topical scientific problems directed at improvement of the medical work, and render efficient aid to the institutions of practical medicine on the clinical bases, in the cities, regions and at the resorts of the Crimea. Consultations in recovery of children are carried out at the children sanatoriums of Eupatoria (health-centers «Zdravnitsa», «Chaika», «Brigantine» and others), at the international children center «Artek». The results of the researches of the department of hospital pediatrics were published in the monograph «Treatment of children at health-resorts of Ukraine». The monograph «Medical aspects of recovery of children in the international children center «Artek» issued at the department of hospital pediatrics received the State Prize of the Republic of the Crimea.
Republican scientific-practical conferences on the recovery of children at the resorts are held annually. On the initiative of the department of hospital pediatrics a number of sanatoriums for treatment of children with diseases of joints, kidneys, respiratory organs were established; Ukrainian research institute of children balneology and physiotherapy has been organized and is functioning successfully. The department popularizes a healthy mode of living. The book «Our Child», in which the questions of physiology, feeding and care for an infant are elucidated, was published.
According to Order by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine №70 of April 3, 1996, students of the first-fifth years are trained on the basis of the common curriculum and irrespective of their specialization take common state final examination on completion of training. In the sixth year of training there is a primary specialization by teaching appropriate special subjects. In 2001/2002 academic year for the first time the faculty will carry out specialization of the graduates, who entered the University in 1996 on the specialty «pediatrics».
All the departments of the faculty work at perfection of through integrated programs of theoretical and practical training of a doctor-pediatrician. A particular attention is paid to clinical profession-oriented aspect in studying fundamental subjects. At these departments the volume of knowledge and skills is determined, and without mastering this base, a student will not be allowed to pass to clinical training. Licensed integrated examinations KROK-1 and KROK-2 are to achieve the same object. These examinations determine the correspondence between the level of professional knowledge and skills of the students and the minimal level of state standard for the specialty «doctor-pediatrician». According to the results of KROK-2 in 2001, the graduates of the faculty got a higher grade (73%) than an average national index (72.5%), which is the evidence of the quality of training of future doctors.
At the faculty where 670 students are trained at present, … of them in the specialty «pediatrics», all the necessary conditions are created to achieve the main aim, i.e. to train a highly-qualified specialist. There are 12 students in an academic group, in the sixth year the number of students in one group is 10. This allows to individualize instruction. Clinical classes are usually taught in hospital wards and in the rooms of functional, laboratory and instrumental diagnostics. The students have a possibility to master knowledge and skills actively. Besides, all the necessary conditions for creative work, intellectual development and self-perfection are provided.
Doctors-pediatricians graduated from our faculty work successfully in all regions of our country and help to solve important social tasks, protecting the health of children. Among them there are: O. N. Starosek, the main pediatrician of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea; Professor V. L. Zubaryev, a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Crimea, the chairman of the commission of the Supreme Soviet of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea in social problems and public health; A. S. Kharchenko); the department of surgical diseases with the course of urology (the head of the department: laureate of the State Prize of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea, Professor V. V. Zhebrovsky), the department of otolaryngology (the head of the department: the main specialist of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea, assistant Professor A. G. Balabantsev) and others.
In training specialists at the stomatological departments the principles of continuity and inter-department integration are maintained (a course on models, propaedeutics, then a clinical course). Modern stomatological technologies are used in instruction, problems of implantation, cermet and other prosthesis, treatment of stomatological diseases are studied. Educational process is conducted well thanks to optimal methodical and material support. Practical classes are taught on the basis of Republican clinical hospital named after N. A. Semashko, Republican children clinical hospital, department hospital at the station of Simferopol, City hospital №7, in clinical halls of the department of orthopedic stomatology. Students have practical training in medical institutions of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea, the Kherson region, on the basis of stomatological departments.
During the last years material and technical support of instruction has improved much: educational area of laboratories has increased, the number of computer classes have reached 14 with 125 computers, 50 rooms have been equipped with audiovisual devices. New apparatuses, instruments and filling materials are constantly bought for stomatological departments.
At the faculty there are good traditions of post-diploma training of highly qualified specialists in clinical ordinature, mastership, postgraduate courses in stomatological specialties. Postgraduates are trained successfully at the departments of dermatological-venereal diseases, of otolaryngology, of surgical stomatology. Masters and clinical ordinators are taught at the departments of therapeutic, surgical, children stomatology, surgical diseases with the course of urology, forensic medicine.
Stomatological departments together with the departments of dermatological-venereal diseases and surgical diseases take part in the scientific program on the state theme «Elaboration of prophylactic and medical remedies on the basis of components of aromatic plants and their introduction into medical practice». Results of the researches of the faculty members are constantly introduced into educational process and medical practice, published as monographs and textbooks. During the last three years 296 works were published, including 4 monographs, 2 textbooks, more than 300 methodical recommendations, 260 articles (6 of them in international journals); 21 patents received. In 2000 the head of the department of surgical diseases with the course of urology V. V. Zhebrovsky issued a practical manual «Early and late post-operative complications in the abdominal surgery» and was awarded the honorary title of the State Prize laureate of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea.
Scientific approach is necessary in forming clinical thinking of future specialists. Most active participants of students’ scientific societies of the stomatological faculty publish the results of their researches in Medical-biological journal of young scientists and students of Medical Academy, then they continue professional researches in the mastership, postgraduate courses and ordinature. The best became the members of the University, leading specialists in public health, chiefs of private stomatological clinics.
The students of the faculty not only grasp the secrets of the specialty, but also may have a good rest, increase their cultural level. Days of the Faculty, competitions for the title Miss and Mister of the University, literary soirees of the club Inspiration are very popular among the students. The faculty organizes trips to wonderful places of the Crimea for students and teachers, which leave unforgettable impressions.
The staff of the department: 2 Professors, 2 assistant Professors, 6 assistants, 3 laboratory assistants.
The department was founded in 1991 on the base of the surgical department of clinical hospital at the station of Simferopol.

They study general surgery with a care of patients in the second year, surgical diseases in the third year, military surgery in the fourth year at the stomatological faculty, and faculty surgery in the fourth year at the medical (including international) faculties.
The members of the department worked out and published methodical recommendations in teaching the above-mentioned subjects. 3 collections of lectures in surgical diseases were printed.
The main scientific problem studied at the department is diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases of the anterior gastric wall. During 10 years 7 Candidate. theses were defended, 3 master’s theses were carried out. The themes of 2 doctoral dissertations were approved. 4 Candidate. theses are being conducted now. 159 scientific works and 1 monograph were published.
The International Faculty
In the Crimean state Medical Academy training of doctors for foreign countries started in 1961, when 6 students from Greece arrived in Simferopol. In 1966 the dean’s office for the work with foreign students was established, which was later on reorganized into the International medical faculty. Foreign doctors have graduated regularly from our Academy since 1967.
The number of the countries, which citizens receive education at our Academy, as well as the quantity of foreign students, are constantly growing. At present students from 38 countries of the world are trained at the Academy.
Since 1999 the Academy has introduced and developed a new method of training – teaching foreign students in the English language.
This is the evidence of perspectives of training specialists for foreign countries; it creates all the conditions for transformation of our Academy into a leading center training not only doctors but also lecturers and research workers for higher medical schools abroad.
The faculty of post-diploma education (FPE)
The faculty of post-diploma education is an important structural unit of the Academy. It has its own 23-year history and traditions. During the years of its existence about 50 thousand of doctors from different regions of Ukraine and the CIS countries improved their qualification at the faculty.
The work at the FPE is carried out in several directions.
The first one is a primary specialization of graduates from our Academy and other higher schools according to assignments issued by Ministry of Health of the Crimea and Ukraine.
During the primary specialization (or internship) graduates acquire a narrow specialty, receive a certificate of a doctor-specialist and the right to work independently.
Primary specialization of young doctors is carried out in 33 specialties: surgery, anesthesiology, all branches of stomatology, therapy, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology and venereology, ophthalmology, radiology, family medicine and others. Every year about 800 doctors are trained in the internship.
The second direction in the post-diploma education is advanced training of doctors at thematic and pre-attestation courses.
Thematic advanced training includes the study of new methods of diagnostics and treatment in different fields of medicine. This requires annual changing of themes of the cycles depending on the interests of practical medicine and close contacts of the FPE with health authorities.
Pre-attestation training of doctors is a system of acquiring or confirming their qualifying categories depending on their length of service and experience. Now a doctor should be attested every 5 years. Because of this, the faculty has much government work for advanced training of doctors: more than 3000 hearers every year, i.e. about 300 doctors every month.
During a year the departments of the faculty conduct 150 pre-attestation and thematic cycles.
The types of post-diploma education are constantly widening. Taking into account a rapidly developing market of medical services, the FPE suggests a number of commercial types of training: clinical ordinature and post-graduate courses for foreign citizens, commercial internship for graduates from commercial higher institutions and faculties, bachelor courses, i.e. the highest level of education for nurses.
One of the popular types of post-diploma education is secondary specialization. Today at the FPE any doctor may get a new or narrower specialty.
The faculty plans to work out new cycles of thematic advanced training and pre-attestation training for nurses and dental mechanics.
Thus, today the faculty suggests almost all types of post-diploma education, from bachelor courses to training at clinical ordinature and postgraduate courses.
It is not by chance that the faculty, which was known as a faculty of advanced training for doctors, in 1997 was renamed into the faculty of post-diploma education.
At present there are 10 departments at the faculty. They are headed by the great scientists, such as the founder and the first dean of the faculty, the head of the department of therapy and gastroenterology, Honoured Worker of public education of Ukraine, Full member of Crimea Academy of Sciences, Professor N.
