Sumy State University is located in Sumy city in the North-East of Ukraine. Its history began in 1948. Today, SumDU is a leading university of a classical type with the IV accreditation level in the region.
The University currently serves about 14,000 students who are pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 55 majors and 23 fields of knowledge. About 1750 foreign students represent about 50 countries worldwide.
Sumy State University enters the ranking of the THE World University Rankings by Times Higher Education at the position of 1001+.

There are more than 3000 employees in the university, including Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, 150 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and 650 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.), Associate Professors represent the academic staff of the University. There are 21 majors in postgraduate and 16 majors in post-doctoral programmes, degree awarding academic councils.
According to the number of commercial contracts and grants, and the efficiency of the use of budget funds, Sumy State University is one of the leaders among Ukrainian universities.
Advanced library information system contains over 3 million items both in hard copies and e-copies and provides access to the most famous electronic databases of the world. The University’s library is a winner of the national competition “Library of the Year” in the nomination “University Libraries” 2019. SumDU repository is the 1st among Ukrainian HEIs and enters TOP-40 of the biggest world institutional repositories according to the Ranking Web of Repositories by Webometrics.
Web of Science Core Collection database indexes the University’s two scientific journals such as “Marketing and Management of Innovations” and “Nanomaterials: Applications and Properties”. The last one and “Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics” are also indexed by SCOPUS database.
Computer Labs and Information Technology
There are TOEFL-center, resource and educational centers of Microsoft, Cisco, PortaOne, Delcam, NETCRACKER, Siemens, SAS, MindK, Apptimized Operations, Brocoders and other companies operating at SumDU campus.
40 kinds of sports and about 100 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. About 100 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World, European and Ukrainian Championships.
Three SumDU undergraduates and masters were invited to join Ukrainian national team for the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London; and six SumDU undergraduates and masters participated in the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. They were awarded with gold medals in relay biathlon race and bronze medals in boxing and biathlon sprint.
More than 100 students won over 200 awards at the World and Europe Championships and Cups, World Universiades and Olympic Games. At the European university games in 2018 SumDU got the 1st place among Ukrainian HEIs according to the number of medals won.
According to the results of the 1st All-Ukrainian Winter Universiade 2019 SumDU got the champion’s title. At the All-Ukrainian Summer Universiades SumDU is a leader in the corresponding HEI category and takes 4th place among all the Ukrainian HEIs.
SumDU has the biggest sport base among educational institutions of Ukraine: Palace of students’ sports – Olympic training base for athletes of Ukraine, indoor beach volleyball complex, 2 stadiums, 3 swimming pools, 6 game halls, 7 playing fields, 2 shooting ranges, water-rowing and ski bases, out-of-town sport and recreation center “Univer”.

To provide students with the best practices, lecturers offer education material of a different type in their courses. The staff of the E-learning Technologies Center of Sumy State university create interactive practical exercises (simulators), using the modern programming languages and technologies (VR / AR). Their number already exceeds 1.700 items. Overall, currently, there are about 1.000 courses, and 155.000 tests, tasks for joint work, discussions, etc.
Since 2010, the Online Studio has been successfully launched at Sumy State University. Online Studio provides lecturers and students with different forms of education:
- audio and video communication;
- virtual sensor board for virtual presentations and demonstrations;
- recording and online broadcast of training videos;
- online-tutorials and classes;
- opportunity to participate in the international online-conferences.
Nowadays, there have been already done and successfully used over 700 educational video materials.
Also, the Online studio allows several visitors to work simultaneously. Each of four workplaces is soundproofed and equipped for the convenient communication between the lecturers and students.
Since April 2016, the entrants have had an opportunity to pass free courses and get the reassessment of their previous results. Sumy State University guarantees the reassessment of the results of the courses, studied by the user within the mass open online courses project “Examinarium”, to be subject to his/her admission (in accordance with the rules of the admission) and further study at SumDU according to the chosen field of study by the distance learning.
SumDU implements the European Experience in the Education Quality Improvement Programs
On June 23, the Professor from the Great Britain Paul Hyland visited Sumy State University. He is an expert in upgrading the quality of education programmes at Bath Spa University and the British Council expert on the quality of education. The trip took place in the framework of the international grant project ALIGN of EU program Tempus “Designing and implementing the National Qualifications Framework.”
The guest conducted a lecture “Building the Curriculum: Learning Outcomes and Student Assessment” for academic and administrative staff of the University.
Paul Hyland accented that Sumy State University makes successful steps towards creating a system of upgrading the quality of education process and bringing educational programmes and educational services in line with the EU standards. He added that the interest of the University team in project’s realization is appreciable.
The Head of the International Affairs Office Konstyantyn Kyrychenko mentioned that owning to Sumy State University participation in such international projects promotes the upgrading of education activity, as well as integration of the University and its services to the EU higher education area.
First of all the work is directed at the Master training programmes. The project is implementing at the faculties of Economics and Management, and Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies. This experience will be broadening to the other faculties, and the Bachelor training programmes of various directions.
The Dean of the faculty of Economics and Management Olha Prokopenko mentioned that assessment of education quality is a very important task for Ukrainian higher education institutions. This thesis is recorded in the new Law on Higher Education. To learn the experience of the best world universities many teachers and university employees visit countries of the EU and the USA. Today SumDU has a good chance to learn the European experience directly inside its walls.
The Lecturer from Germany Conducted a Seminar-Training for SumDU Students and Teachers
On May 25, Sumy State University welcomed the lecturer of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Maximilian Doener. This time the lecturer explained students, postgraduate students and teachers of SumDU with peculiarities of writing a curriculum vitae and motivation letter in German. All presenters have got information about the application forms for scholarship programmes, internships, summer schools, and studying in Germany.
The great attention was paid to proper composing of the application letters, in particular its special features of structure and content. Also the comparative analyze of samples of documents was conducted. The questions of successful interview have been discussed.
The participants worked in mini-groups, discussed urgent issues concerning writing of curriculum vitae and motivation letters, actively debated, as well as put a chain of questions to the lecturer.
The student of the faculty ElIT Oksana Oparii told that she would like to participate in German internship programmes and studying; that’s why a seminar was urgent and interesting for her. The Assistant of SumDU Medical Institute majored in Infection Diseases with Epidemiology Anna Piddubna also mentioned on the training’s comprehension. She was interested in internship programmes for medical sphere.
The Internship Program of German Business for Ukraine was presented for SumDU Students
On March 4, the presentation of scholarship programmes, which offers internships at the leading German enterprises, especially such companies as Deutche Bank, Bosch, Siemens, Deutche Welle took place at Sumy State University.
The project coordinator of the European Office of Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Martin Reuter visited SumDU not for the first time, and conducted this event for SumDU students and postgraduate students.
Ukrainian students and postgraduate students will start doing their internship in the framework of this programme in September 2015. The leading German enterprises propose 25 vacancies for Ukrainian interns. At the present moment the applying of admitted candidates on the internship programme for 2016 is conducting. The students of 3d – 5th years of study, as well as graduates and postgraduate students majored in Economics, Engineering and Media can apply.
The programme covers financial expenses for travel, medical insurance and accommodation, as well as provides the monthly allowance.
Center for Quality Assurance of Higher Education
The main tasks and responsibilities of the Center for Education Quality Assurance and Quality Assurance in Higher Education comprise:
– monitoring of the quality of education at the university in the following aspects:
- organization and conduct of surveys of students, postgraduates, listeners of the training and skills upgrading programmes, teachers in respect to the quality of the educational process; graduates of the University and employers in respect to the quality of academic programmes and readiness of graduates for professional activities; analyses of the results;
- organizational and methodological assistance to the student self- government in surveying and organization of conferences “Educational Process from Students’ Point of View” and other events on the organization of the educational process;
- an analysis of the quality of classes (attendance of classes etc.);
– monitoring of quality assurance in higher education in the following aspects:
- annual evaluation of the students’ performance (organization and conduct of administrative (rector’s) controls of the students’ academic performance);
- an analysis of the academic performance and achievements of students (results of the attestation and exam sessions, etc.)
– coordination of the work of the University’s departments in the domain of the quality of education;
– prompt responses (preparation of the drafts of orders and other documents on education quality assurance) to the detected violations of the standards for quality assurance in the educational process at the University;
– analysis and summarizing of the state of education and higher education quality at the University, preparation of the proposals to the Scientific Council, the rector and relevant consultative bodies on how to improve this activity according to the latest teaching and learning techniques, preparation of the corresponding recommendations and other regulatory documents.
For 25 years, SSU has been training in the specialty “Medicine” (until 2016 – “Medical Affairs”). The high level of preparation of students at the Medical Institute is confirmed by the leadership in the rankings of the licensing exams “Step 1”, “Step 2”, “Step 3”, All-Ukrainian competitions of student research papers and subject competitions. The possibility of rapid career growth in the professional or scientific field is confirmed by the presence among graduates of 10 doctors of sciences, 7 chief physicians, 22 deputy chief physicians, 40 heads of departments. Among the graduates who are especially proud of the Medical Institute are the head of the Sumy Regional State Administration Butenko Serhiy Pavlovych and the director of the Medical Institute of SSU Loboda Andriy Mykolayovych.
