The history of Zaporizhia State Medical University comes back to the Women Pedagogical Courses organized in Odessa in 1903. In 1959 the Pharmaceutical Institute was transferred from Odessa to Zaporizhia and renamed in Zaporizhia Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1968 the institution became Zaporizhia State Medical University.

General Information

The main objective of the University is to provide higher medical education for Specialist’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as postgraduate training in internship, mastership, postgraduate study, residency and refresher courses for physicians and pharmacists.

There are 8 Faculties at the University (Medical Faculty No. 1, Medical Faculty No. 2, Medical Faculty No. 3, two Pharmaceutical Faculties (intramural and extramural), International Faculty No. 1, International Faculty No. 2, Faculty of Postgraduate Education), Medical College and University Clinic for 160 patients and 250 consultations at polyclinic.

The training at the University includes pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate periods of study. Foreign students are trained at the International Faculty No. 1 for further studies at higher educational institutions of Ukraine.

During their training at the University both Ukrainian and foreign students get higher education for the Specialist’s and Master’s degrees (“General Medicine”, “Pediatrics”, “Dentistry”, “Pharmacy”, “Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations”).

Postgraduate education includes training in internship, mastership and postgraduate study in 29 specialties, in doctoral candidacy — in 12 specialties, as well as refresher courses for physicians and pharmacists.

10200 students, postgraduates, interns, students of refresher courses, teachers-probationers, masters and clinical residents study at the University. There are more than 2200 foreign students from 40 countries at the University. 1024 students are taught in English. The University has gained authority and recognition by training foreign citizens from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe for more than 40 years. About 10500 specialists have got medical and pharmaceutical education and are working now in more than 100 countries of the world, taking up high positions in the public health systems of their countries.

At Zaporizhzhia State Medical University students acquire knowledge subject to the requirements of the European system of education. The academic curricula are based on the best models of native and foreign practice of specialists’ training.

Students, bachelors, interns, masters, postgraduates, teachers working for Doctor’s degree as well as students of refresher courses study at 61 departments. The training is carried out with the use of the most modern scientific and pedagogical technologies.

There were 676 lecturers at the University in 2014: 120 Professors and Doctors of Sciences, 444 Associate Professors and PhDs are engaged in scientific-pedagogic work. There are one Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 46 members of International Academies of Sciences and International Scientific Societies, 8 Honorary Science and Engineering Workers of Ukraine, 1 Honorary worker of Higher School of Ukraine, 4 State Prize Winners, 5 Prize Winners of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences, 1 Prize Winner of National Academy of Sciences and Medical Academy of Sciences named after V.P. Komisarenko, 1 Prize Winner of the President of Ukraine, 2 Prize Winner of the Cabinet of Ministry of Ukraine, 3 Honorary Physicians of Ukraine among them.

The scientific schools of the University are well known outside Ukraine. Cardiological, surgery, pharmaceutical schools are among them. For the first time in Ukraine the specialists of Zaporizhzhia State Medical University have successfully performed the transplantations of heart. More than 500 transplantations of liver, kidney and pancreas have been performed. More than 20 preparations have been worked out by the scientists of the pharmaceutical school, produced and brought into medical practice in many countries abroad. The results of scientific work were reported at international forums in Sweden, Czech Republic, Spain, Holland, Brazil and Austria. The University has its own scientific editions: “Zaporizhzhia Medical Journal”, “Current Issues in Pharmacy and Medicine: Science and Practice”, “Pathology”.

There is a developed infrastructure of scientific units at the University including SRI (Scientific Research Institute) of medical and ecological problems, Institute of clinical pathology of a man, SMA “Pharmatron”, central scientific research laboratory, certification-testing laboratory of perfume and cosmetic preparations and household products, department of doctoral candidacy and postgraduate study, editorial publishing department, Center of informatics and analytical support and testing, patent department, scientific research division, metrology service. Scientific Research Institute and laboratories are equipped with unique facilities for conducting fundamental and applied scientific researches.

There are Specialized Councils of Higher Attestation Commission for defense of Candidate and Doctor Degrees in different specialties. 30 theses for Doctor’s degree in 23 specialties and 143 theses for Candidate’s degree in 35 specialties were defended at the University during the last five years. 35 theses of Doctor’s degree and 137 theses for Candidate’s degree are being fulfilled ate the University according to the plan of preparation of scientific and pedagogical specialists. The University publishes periodic scientific and practical journals: “Zaporizhzhia Medical Journal”, “Pathology”, “Current Issues in Pharmacy and Medicine: Science and Practice”, 10-15 All-Ukrainian scientific-research and practical conferences with international participation are held annually.

The introduction of computer technologies into the teaching-studying process, scientific research and management is one of the priority-driven University’s activities. 42 computer classrooms and 1300 PC provide students with academic curricula based on multimedia technologies and test control in the main disciplines. ZSMU has its own information Internet server. There is a centre of telemedicine and distance learning at the University which provides the participation in international scientific conferences held on the basis of videoconference technologies, organization and holding of scientific-methods videoconferences, organization of distance refresher courses for University teaching staff, using of distance technologies in training of students by correspondence.

Zaporizhzhia State Medical University is a participant of the International program Tempus. According to grant TEMPUS IV University fulfills the international program «Establishment of the Supra-Regional Network of the National Centers in Medical Education, focused on PBL and Virtual Patients», collaborates with a recognized language center Canadian College of English language (Vancouver, Canada) to improve the English language in online mode. Zaporizhzhia State Medical University takes one of the first places in Ukraine in technical-material supply. The prestige of the University is formed by the availability of its own training facilities. Zaporizhzhia State Medical University is one of the few medical higher educational institutions in Ukraine that has its own training-scientific center “University Clinic” in which practical classes are conducted and medical aid is delivered. The University has the unique equipment: computer tomographs, devices for ultrasonic diagnosis, angiographic and endoscopic checkup, radioisotope diagnosis and many others to conduct fundamental and applied scientific investigations.

There is an electronic library and electronic catalogue in the scientific library of the University. The users have access to the electronic database of the library and can carry out a search from any computer connected with Internet and get full text-books.

Zaporizhzhia State Medical University looks like a student campus on the picturesque bank of the river Dnieper, the biggest river in Europe. It is a detached territory on which there are 5 academic buildings, 5 hostels, scientific and belletristic literature libraries with reading halls and computer rooms, medical centre, student’s sanatorium-dispensary, several canteens and cafes, sports center, courts and stadium. There is an amateur art club for students who are keen on singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. Ukrainian historical and cultural parties, festivals of international friendship, competition parties are held at ZSMU.

All academic building, hostels, scientific library have access to Internet. There are Wi-Fi access points at the territory of the University. The student campus is under of the University security round-the-clock. The campus and hostels are equipped with the means of video surveillance and control.

The Department of Internal Diseases No. 3 (258 beds in total) curates the therapeutic units of the hospital: Cardiological (30 beds), Gastroenterological (30 beds), Pulmonological (30 beds), Nephrological (30 beds), Hematologic (40 beds), Rheumatology and Clinical Immunobiology (30 beds), Allergology and Clinical Immunology Center (30 beds), Occupational Pathology and Rehabilitation of the Chernobyl Accident Victims (38 beds). The staff of the department also conducts an advisory reception in the clinic.

The Department of Hospital Surgery (75 beds in total) curates following units: General Surgery (25 beds), Vascular Surgery (50 beds).

The Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics (53 beds in total) curates following units: Traumatology (30 beds), Orthopedics, Arthrology and Sports Trauma (23 beds).

Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Oncology Center (305 beds in total) is the clinical base of the Department of Oncology and Surgical Oncology.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Antituberculous Clinical Center (510 beds in total) is the clinical base of the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology.

The Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology (270 beds in total) curates following units: 1st Pulmonary Tuberculosis (60 beds), 3rd Pulmonary Tuberculosis (150 beds) and the Children’s Unit (60 beds). Zaporizhzhia Regional Medical Center of Cardiovascular Diseases (305 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Department of Internal Diseases No. 1 that curates following units: Ischemic Heart Disease (85 beds), Hypertensive Disease (50 beds), Arrhythmias and Heart Failure (60 Beds) and EM (12 beds). Zaporizhzhia Regional Psychiatric Hospital, the Regional Drug Treatment Clinic (711 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, General and Medical Psychology, Narcology and Sexology that curates all units of the hospital and the clinic. Zaporizhzhia Regional Dermatovenereologic Center (210 beds in total) is the clinical base of the Department of Dermatovenereology and Cosmetology with the course of Dermatovenereology and Aesthetic Medicine of the FPE that curates following units: Venereologic (70 beds), Feminine Dermatic (50 beds), Masculine Dermatic (60 beds), Mycological (40 beds). The staff of the department also conducts an advisory reception at the clinic of the center.

 

Zaporizhzhia Regional Endocrinological Center (65 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Departments of Internal Medicine No. 1 and Hospital Surgery that curates following units: Diabetology (35 beds), Endocrinology (30 beds). Zaporizhzhia Regional Center of Human Reproduction (81 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine of the FPE that curates all units of the center: Reproductive Health (75 beds), AEM (6 beds).

 

City Clinical Hospital No. 2 (155 beds in total) is a clinical base of 2 ZSMU departments.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Perinatal Center (134 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which curates Obstetrical and Gynecological Units, and the Department of Children’s Diseases of the FPE, which curates following units: Neonates (30 beds), Neonatal Reanimation (9 Beds), Post-Emergency Nursing (Care) of Neonates (20 beds).

 

Clinical Maternity Hospital No. 9 (140 beds in total) is a clinical base of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology that curates following units: Maternity (50 beds), Pregnant Women’s Pathology (40 beds), Gynecologic (50 beds).

 

Medical Unit of Motor Sich OJSC (245 beds in total) is a clinical base of 3 departments.

The Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics curates the Traumatology and Orthopedics Unit (20 beds).

The Department of Urology, Radiation Diagnostics and Therapy curates the Urological Unit.

The Department of Therapeutic, Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry curates the Dental Unit.

 

City Hospital No. 1 of Zaporizhzhia (195 beds in total) is the clinical base of 3 ZSMU departments.

City Multipurpose Clinical Hospital No. 9 is the clinical base of the Department of Ophthalmology (50 beds).

 

Primary Health and Ambulance Care Center No. 6 is a clinical base of the Department of General Practice — Family Medicine, providing advises for the day inpatient facility (30 beds).

 

Zaporizhzhia Regional Medical and Sports Center is the clinical base of the Department of Physical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Physical Education and Health that curates the Sports Medicine Unit.

 

Zaporizhzhia Regional Bureau of Pathological Anatomy and Zaporizhzhia Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Expertise are the clinical bases of the Department of Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine that curates the Research and Diagnostic Center of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Bureau of Pathological Anatomy and the Unit of Commission Expertise and the Organizational and Methodological Unit of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Expertise.

 

PI Regional Children’s Multipurpose Health Center is the clinical base of 2 departments: Hospital Pediatrics and Propaedeutics of Children’s Diseases (120 beds).

 

Zaporizhzhia Military Hospital of Military Base A3309 is a clinical base of 3 departments: Disaster Medicine, Military Medicine and AEM (Surgical, Internal Medicine, Infectious diseases and REM units); Therapeutic, Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry (Dental Office); Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics (Clinical and Bacteriological Laboratories).

 

Health Center Velykyi Luh of Priazovkurort PJSC is the clinical base of 3 departments: Obstetrics and Gynecology (Unit of Pregnant Women’s Pathology); General Practice — Family Medicine (Neurological Unit); Therapeutic, Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry (Dental Office).

Training  fields

Zaporizhzhia State Medical University takes one the first places in the system of higher medical education of Ukraine with the number  of foreign students being trained there. Training of foreign citizens has been carried out at ZSMU since 1973. Over 10500 foreign students completed training in different specialties and got diplomas. Thirty-six foreign graduates undertook post-graduate courses and successfully defended theses. Since 2002 foreign students have been taught in English.

The system of training at Zaporizhzhia State Medical University includes pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate periods of study. The premedical education is provided at the International Faculty No.1 and then foreign students continue studies at the International Faculty No.2.

The training of foreign students and their specializations is carried out in the following specialties:

  •        Medicine. MD. (General Medicine for those who receive qualification “Specialist”) . Period of study is 6 years.
  • Pediatrics. MD. Period of study is 6 years.
  • Dentistry. MD. Period of study is 5 years.
  • Pharmacy. Master of Pharmacy. Period of study is 5 years.

Junior students are trained at the theoretical departments in the academic buildings situated on the territory of the campus. Senior students are trained at the clinical departments in clinics situated near the University.

Zaporizhzhia State Medical University is one of the few medical universities in the system of higher medical education in Ukraine that has its own training-scientific centre “University Clinic” in which practical classes are conducted and medical aid is delivered. The University has the unique equipment: computer tomographs, devices for ultrasonic diagnosis, angiographic and endoscopic tests, radioisotope diagnosis and many others to conduct fundamental and applied scientific investigations.

Post-diploma education includes training in the internship, training for Master’s degree, clinical studies, postgraduate courses in 28 medical specialties and refresher courses for doctors and pharmacists.

Accommodation

Zaporizhzhia State Medical University looks like a student campus. Trees, bushes and lawns surrounding the campus, the picturesque banks of the largest river of Ukraine – the Dnieper – promote a favourable climate and conditions for creative studies.

Student campus is a detached territory protected by a specialized guard for 24 hours. The teacher’s duty is organized in the hostels. The campus and hostels are equipped with the means of video surveillance and control. ZSMU has organized the lighting of adjacent territories at its own expense. The patrolling of the University campus and adjacent territories is conducted by the university guide with the assistance of the police.

There are 5 academic buildings, 5 hostels, scientific and belletristic literature libraries with reading halls and computer rooms, medical centre, student’s sanatorium-dispensary, sports center, courts and stadium, some canteens and cafes, shoe repair shop and clothing repair shop on its territory. There is a canteen at the University with Indian cuisine which is very popular with foreign students.

5 student hostels of the University accommodate about 3000 persons; three of them are for foreign citizens. The hostel buildings are of a modern block type and consist of the rooms for 1-2-3 persons with all the conveniences. There are Internet halls in the hostels for foreign citizens. The rooms of the hostels have access to the Internet. There are Indian cultural centre and computer class in hostel No. 1.
